2022 Lands Team
The Wisconsin Sierra Club Lands Team has been very busy this past year working on issues that protect and support the forests and parks of our beautiful state. Some of our projects are:
- Working with the state and counties in the development of 15-year forest plans: encouraging sustainable logging, preservation of old growth forests, and support of private land management.
- Encouraging our state to follow the National Sierra Club goal to protect 30% of our lands and waters by 2030.
- Working to pass Assembly Bill 375 (Every Kid Outdoors), which would provide every fourth grader and their family with free access to our state parks for one year. The bill has widespread support from citizens, as well as the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, the Department of Natural Resources, and a bipartisan group of state legislators. In February of this year, the bill passed out of committee. The next step is a floor vote, which we hope will take place this year.
- Actively continuing to protest the Kohler Corporation's plan to use 15 acres of the Kohler Andrae State Park as part of another golf course.
- Encouraging lawmakers to protect the integrity of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund, a program that has helped expand access to natural areas and outdoor recreation across the state, so that current and future generations can continue to enjoy Wisconsin’s public lands.
- Working with our Equity Committee to make our forest lands and parks accessible to everyone.
- Participating in meaningful events, such as this year’s Locally Grown, Nationally Known virtual presentation (which featured the beautiful Cain’s Orchard!), No Mow May (a month-long lawnmowing hiatus that encouraged the growth of native plant species), and a celebration of National Trails Day (June 4) at Indian Lake County Park.
- Encouraging outdoor activity in all seasons.
All of these efforts require time and financial support. Our Lands Team has set a goal of raising $600 by August 31, 2022. If you support our efforts, we ask you to consider making a donation - even $5 helps us continue with these projects! 100% of donations go toward our work in Wisconsin.
Thanks so much!
